Our Volunteers

A special group of volunteers is helping Colchester East Hants Health Authority achieve its vision of healthy people, healthy communities and quality health services. Volunteers enhance and compliment the quality of health serviced provided to residents of Colchester and East Hants.

In the year 2005, volunteers contributed 4255 hours of service to our patients and programs at Colchester Regional Hospital; More than 20 volunteers are working hard in our communities as members of our Community Health Boards and The dedicated volunteers with our hospital foundations and auxiliaries and helping ensure we have the resources that are needed to continue providing quality health services.

Benefits of Volunteering!
Volunteering is the most fundamental act of citizenship and philanthropy in our society. It is offering time, energy and skills of one's own free will. It benefits both the volunteer and the organizations and individuals they volunteer to help.

Volunteer work provides experience, whether to a young person seeking to learn about a career or embarking on a new life experience, a mid-career professional hoping to branch out a bit, a pre-retiree exploring the transition from the labour market, or the senior who seeks the opportunity to actively participate.

Over 6.5 million volunteers in Canada gave approximately 1 billion hours of volunteer time in 2000-the equivalent of about 549,000 full-time jobs, more than the labour force of several provinces. If an economic equivalent was assigned to this time the contribution of volunteers would be more than $17 billion per year.

Older adults have a lifetime of knowledge and skills to share as they move from the workplace to retirement. For many newly retired people, volunteering helps make the transition a positive experience by helping them to create and maintain new relationships, use their valuable skills, give back to their communities and mentor others.

According to Volunteering and Healthy Aging: What We Know, "people who give their time to a volunteer activity, especially if it involves helping others, are happier and healthier in their later years." The report also says "volunteering is a people-to-people business. A lot of benefit comes from being in touch with others and having an impact on their lives."
