Perinatal services refer to those services provided throughout the course of an individual's pregnancy, and beyond. A perinatal clinic nurse, in collaboration with obstetricians/ gynaecologists, provides assistance with services such as fetal assessment and counseling women who are booked for C-sections.
Colchester Regional Hospital also offers satellite Perinatal Clinics to residents of Colchester and East Hants. A perinatal assessment nurse from Colchester Regional Hospital travels with an obstetrician/gynaecologist to a satellite clinic in Shubenacadie on a monthly basis. A registered nurse from Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital also works with an obstetrician/gynaecologist to provide care to expecting mothers and families from the Tatamagouche area on a bi-weekly basis. An obstetrician/gynaecologist from the district also provides satellite Perinatal Clinic services on a monthly basis to expectant mothers and families at the Musquodoboit Valley Hospital. The perinatal clinic nurse provides follow-up breastfeeding support, nursing assessment, care, counseling and referral services to mothers and babies following discharge from the hospital in collaboration with Public Health Services and physicians.
